The Devil Made Me Do It – A Collection of Wickedly Fun Love Stories
Excerpt from: Daydreams
Getting on the elevator to go home was the best part of my day. Fortunately, the small metal cube was empty, so I leaned back against the wall and let my purse slide to the floor. God, I hate my job. I’m a receptionist at a deadly dull accounting firm. The phone never rings. I wouldn’t mind if I had other duties to occupy my time, but the guys I work for are control freaks—they never give me anything to do. So, I spend my time daydreaming, and when the phones switch over to the answering service at five o’clock, I am ready stop dreaming and start living.
The elevator pinged and slid to a stop at the fifteenth floor. I bit my lip to hide a smile and waited for my favorite fantasy subject to step through the open doors. Alex Masters, junior partner at the Law Offices of Jacobs, Bradley, and Barnes, looked up from his Wall Street Journal and straight at me.
“Hi, Carrie.”
Geez, I hope he didn’t hear me gulp. “Hi Alex.” Say something witty Carrie. “Some weather we’re having, isn’t it?” I’m not usually such a dope, but put me in the presence of that hunk and all my mental faculties break down—except for the pleasure stimulating ones. He was at least six foot three, maybe more, and built like a Greek god. Yeah, yeah, cliché, but damn—he fit the bill!
A wicked stroke of lightning flashed in those gorgeous blue eyes of his as the elevator doors closed. “No kidding.”
“I love thunderstorms. I love watching the storm clouds roll across the mountains, watching the lightning strike, hearing the thunder rumble as it gets closer.” I had to stop for breath. “A stormy day holds so much potential for excitement.” As if confirming my words, the elevator lights flickered, making my heart skip.
Alex just stared at me, and I wondered if I showed a little too much excitement. I felt my face get warm, but it didn’t stop there. The heat flowed down my neck, trickled over my nipples, and pooled between my legs.
His eyes roamed over my body then met mine. “Sure does,” he said with a thoughtful look on his face.
And then he smiled. I lived for that smile. It’s too beautiful for words, but I’ll try. When Alex Masters smiles at me, I feel it all the way to my toes. It’s not just the way his lips curve over his fine face; it’s the way his eyes sparkle like he has some wonderful secret he’d love to tell. I have so often wished he’d share that secret with me. Then, maybe I could share my secret dreams with him….
He was just about to share something when the lights flickered and went out. The elevator shuddered and stopped and so did my heart. We stood silent for a few breathless seconds until the emergency lights came on.
“Is this what you call excitement?” Alex grinned at me, and I thought I caught just a hint of suggestion in his tone. Wishful thinking.
“Um….” I didn’t dare say anything for fear he’d read my mind. Every time he and I were in that elevator alone, I wished for it to stop, trapping us inside while we made mad passionate love. Maybe I should be careful what I wished for.
He put down his briefcase and inspected the ceiling. “In the movies, there’s always a trap door in the roof.” Alex pushed every ceiling tile but none came loose. “I guess you can’t trust Hollywood,” he said with a wink.
The message from my brain to speak finally made it to my tongue. I just hoped something intelligent came out. “Can’t you pry the doors open? That always works in the movies.”
Alex twisted his lips and studied the sealed doors. “Who do you think I look like? Hercules?”
Um…tall, bronzed, sculpted…. “Yeah.” I think that surprised him more than me because he stopped working on the doors and turned around. I put on my best ‘who me?’ mask, but he saw right through it.
He looked at me, into me. I just knew he could see the naughty pictures in my head. “Can I tell you a secret?”
Yes yes yes yes yes! “Sure.”
“You may look like a harmless woman with your serious brown hair and your wool suit, but I know there’s something wicked going on behind those chocolate eyes.”
Well damn. He knew me better than I thought. “Care to find out if you’re right?” Who said that?
Alex smiled and the uninhibited lust in his eyes excited me more than the most passionate thunderstorm. “The power could come back on any minute.”
“Yeah.” I didn’t think he really wanted me anyway. “We’d better behave.”
“Or,” he paused, letting the alternative hang between us, “we’d better not waste any time.”
His voice was so low and husky I wasn’t sure I heard him. “Don’t tease me, Alex.”
He took two steps and slid his hand behind my neck, making slow circles with his fingers in the valley under my hair. “Only if you want me to.”
Did I have to draw a picture for the man? But I caught a twinkle in his eyes and realized he was playing with me already. “Tease me, Alex.”
